Consulting

Definition: Consulting is a broad term to describe the act of providing advisory services in a particular area of expertise, such as information technology or strategic planning.

An Initial Consultation

1. Problem overview
a) How was the problem formulated?
b) How will the results be used?

2. Technical assessment of data
a) What are the outliers, limitations, and/or constraints on the data?
b) How would you rate the level of difficulty of the problem?

3. The client
a) Who will receive the results?
b) How would you assess the client’s knowledge of statistical concepts?
c) What are his/her expectations for your work?

4. Risks and limitations
a) How can limitations be mitigated?
b) What dependencies do limitations have on your statistical methods?
c) Will the results negatively impact anyone? (other companies, people, etc.)

5. Dates and benchmarks
Develop timeline, deliverables, LOE required

6. Next steps
a) How will things be documented and tracked?
b) When is the next meeting to take place?
